Matthew 16:13- 19
The message from Sunday morning focused on the question Jesus asked of His disciples: Who do they say I am? The disciples answered with:
Not one of the answers included Christ, the Son of God.
Jesus then asked the disciples, "Who do you say that I am?"
Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
It was then that Jesus gave Simon the name of Peter, proclaiming that it was a Spirit-revealed answer. The next statement is largely misunderstood to mean that Jesus was building his church on Peter. Christ would not build His church on a man, rather it was Peter's confession of Jesus as the Christ to which Jesus referred. His church would be built on the confession of believers. Power comes from confession. Jesus says in verses 16-19 that He will give us the keys to loose people from the bondage of sin.
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
Who do you say He is? A prophet, a miracle worker, a teacher? Or is He the Christ, the Son of the Living God?
